Catherine Young Bates RCA

C. Y. Bates is a Montreal-based artist who exhibits internationally. Movement, energy and exuberance are characteristics of her representational work. She uses tube oils and pigment sticks on canvas and wood, and acrylic and mixed media on paper. She has a unique style of drawing with paint using vibrant colour. Subjects are predominantly landscapes, inspired by visits to specific locations, and still lifes are also painted. Some works edge into environmental concerns, such as in the Icarus Series. Drawing into the paint is characteristic of all of her work.

International exhibits began with the Canadian Young Contemporaries in London, ON, and continued with the Maryland Regional, The Society of Canadian Painter-Etchers and Engravers, The Ontario Society of Artists and La société canadienne de l’aquarelle, etc.  She has works in major private and corporate collections, and educational institutions.  She is a member of P.E.N International (Counterpane:Poems and Drawings was published by Ken Hertz.)  She also belongs to the Royal Canadian Society of Artists (RCA).  She is the mother of two children.  She taught for many years in the Fine Arts Department of Dawson College, Montreal, and in many summer workshops. She participated in international conferences and wrote as art critic for The Montreal Star and numerous magazines, and continues to write poetry and a journal.

She lived and exhibited for six years in Baltimore, MD, spent a year drawing in Oxford, England, had residencies in Newfoundland, Taos, NM, Arroyo Seco, NM, as well as working in the Canadian Arctic, Georgian Bay, Vermont, England and France. She was awarded the 2006 Distinguished Alumni Award from Victoria College, University of Toronto.  A large catalogue called Out of Line was published in 2009, with articles by curators Joyce Millar (Stewart Hall) and Victoria LeBlanc (Visual Arts Centre).

She has a large studio and feels privileged to work regularly, aiming always to develop further her ability to perceive and express vitality. Practised discipline, technical fluency, and free invention are trademarks for her energetic works.
